EN 1021-2 Upholstered Seating for Workplaces

EN 1021-2 seating includes upholstered office chairs, conference seats, beam seating and lounge furniture. The standard tests the ignitability of upholstery material combinations under a small-flame source. It is distinct from EN 1021-1, which uses a smouldering cigarette. A result applies to the tested cover and filling combination, so the chosen upholstery version needs to be identified clearly.

Read the small-flame result accurately

EN 1021-2 is a method for assessing an upholstery combination under specified laboratory conditions. It does not certify that a finished chair is fireproof or predict every possible fire scenario in a building. The report should identify the tested assembly and the outcome. If a sofa or chair is offered with several covers, confirm which ones are included. The flame source in this standard is deliberately defined; it should not be confused with a larger wooden-crib test or with the requirements of a room-level fire assessment. State the exact test the brief requires.

For EN 1021-2 seating, keep the material code, product model and test document together. A supplier statement may summarise the result, but the detailed scope matters when a project has a formal fire brief. Avoid extending a report from one fabric and filling to another merely because the furniture looks similar.

Fit executive and task chairs

Office chairs with upholstered seats may have fixed or adjustable arms, different backs and swivel bases. Compare the exact adjustment range with the intended desk and user. A chair must leave room to approach equipment and stand without hitting storage. If multiple people use the same position, make adjustment controls easy to reach and understand.

EN 1021-2 seating should be evaluated for daily use separately from its fire-test evidence. A high-back executive chair may be visually prominent, but that does not establish fit for a particular person. The chosen cover can also affect feel and care, so assess it alongside the chair’s functions. A busy shared office may call for a different cleaning routine from a private room. The upholstery that meets the fire brief should also be suitable for the way the chair will be maintained.

Plan beam seating as an assembly

Multi-seat beam systems can include upholstered seats, backs and small table elements. Identify which parts are covered by the ignition report. A beam with several different materials may require more than one document. If a seat pad is optional, the fire evidence for the bare version may not describe the upholstered version. Check the actual combination rather than the frame name. Check the final assembly and any wall or floor fixing instructions separately.

Within EN 1021-2 seating, a waiting area must remain easy to enter and leave. Place the beam so people can sit without standing in a through-route. Leave room at each end for circulation and consider where users put bags. The small-flame test result does not answer these layout questions.

Give sofas room for conversation

An upholstered sofa can create a softer alternative to a formal meeting room. Position it with a reachable table and seats facing the intended conversation. A modular sofa may have corner and end components that change the upholstery assembly, so check each selected module against the supporting evidence. Lay out the complete group before selecting the finish, since orientation and access can alter which pieces are needed.

The room’s fire strategy should be considered beyond any one item of furniture. Keep routes to doors clear and follow the hazard category required by the project. An EN 1021-2 test is one piece of evidence, not an automatic substitute for a broader non-domestic seating requirement.

Complete a precise specification

Record the model, cover, filling and relevant EN 1021-2 result in the schedule. If the design changes fabric or module configuration, recheck the documentation before finalising. Where both cigarette and small-flame tests are requested, confirm each separately.

EN 1021-2 seating can serve offices and shared areas when the selected materials match the tested combination. Choose the seat for the person and task, place it in a workable room plan and keep the fire evidence attached to that exact choice.
