EN 1021-1 seating includes upholstered task, executive, conference and shared chairs. The standard assesses the ignitability of material combinations used in upholstered seating when exposed to a smouldering cigarette under test conditions. It concerns the cover-and-filling combination, rather than proving that a finished chair cannot burn. The exact materials in the selected seat therefore matter.
Understand the test boundary
EN 1021-1 is a test method for a defined smouldering ignition source. The standard’s scope is narrower than a complete room fire assessment and different from a small-flame test under EN 1021-2. A result for one upholstery assembly should not be applied to another fabric, foam or interliner without evidence.
For EN 1021-1 seating, check the test report or supplier statement for the specified version. Note the cover, filling, date and any conditions of the result. If the range offers many finishes, a broad family name may conceal important construction differences. Keep the chosen material code alongside the test evidence. This is particularly useful when several chairs share a room but use different upholstery grades. A schedule that only says ‘fabric chair’ may be too vague to match a laboratory report to the delivered furniture.
Choose task chairs for the user
A swivel chair at a desk should support the person and their equipment. Compare seat and back adjustment, armrests and the movement of the base. Leave enough floor space for the user to approach the desk, reach storage and stand without striking a neighboring workstation.
EN 1021-1 seating may include mesh-back chairs with upholstered seats as well as fully upholstered forms. Their material combinations differ, so confirm which parts the test report describes. Fire evidence is important, but it does not replace a trial of the chair at the intended desk. A supportive seat also needs the right height relative to the work surface and enough movement for the user’s normal tasks. A chair that fits the specification on paper may still feel constrained beside a particular pedestal or screen.
Make conference positions workable
A cantilever chair, four-star chair and conventional four-leg chair can all serve a meeting, yet their bases affect handling and spacing. Test the chair at the actual table, including armrest clearance and the route behind occupied seats. Consider whether participants turn toward a screen or face one another throughout the session.
Within EN 1021-1 seating, upholstered conference chairs can give a room a softer appearance. Choose a finish that suits the expected use and cleaning routine, then verify that the finish belongs to the tested combination. A late change from fabric to another covering deserves a new check. Consider how the chairs will be maintained as well: the correct care method helps preserve the supplied material without changing it casually during use.
Plan shared and beam seating
Beam seats can organise a waiting area or corridor edge. They need room for several people to arrive and leave, not just space for the frame itself. If a wall-mounted or multi-seat assembly has different seat pads or back panels, confirm which upholstered components are covered by the EN 1021-1 evidence.
The arrangement should keep entrances and circulation clear. A compliant upholstery combination does not answer whether the beam is correctly fixed or whether the area has enough access. Review installation and layout separately from the ignition test. Mark the seat positions with people present, including space for bags and a route past the end of the beam. This makes the waiting area more usable and keeps the test claim in its proper context.
Keep the result tied to the furniture
A schedule should identify the chair model, upholstery assembly and reported EN 1021-1 result. Where another fire category is required, record that separately rather than treating the cigarette test as a complete classification. The project fire brief should determine which evidence is necessary.
EN 1021-1 seating can meet a clearly stated material-test requirement when the documented assembly matches the furniture supplied. Select seats for the people and activities first, then confirm the relevant test record. That keeps both the room plan and the fire claim accurate.
