Draw The Occupied Office Chair Layout
Mark the desk, storage and neighbouring furniture before evaluating the chair’s position. Add the space people use to approach the seat and leave it after working. Silver base office chairs without armrests still need their full seat and base dimensions checked against that plan. If a backrest or control projects beyond the seat, include it in the assessment. Observe the intended user moving through the arrangement rather than relying entirely on measurements. Note any point where furniture affects access, and review the layout again after moving equipment. Keep the final drawing linked to the chair and desk actually assessed.
Examine Arm Position Without Chair Armrests
Once access has been assessed, ask the user to perform familiar desk tasks. Without chair-mounted armrests, forearm support needs to be reviewed through the person’s working position and surrounding equipment. Check keyboard and pointing device placement, document handling and any regularly repeated reach. Office chairs should be assessed for seat and backrest fit at the same time, with required adjustments confirmed individually. Ask what changes the user needs and record the task that prompted each observation. Repeat this process for shared workstations, since a workable arrangement for one person does not establish that everyone using the desk has the same requirements.
